In 1771, the twin lighthouses on Thacher Island, off the coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, were built as a navigational tool to aid "safe passage" for Europeans first entering the United States. In 2001 the lighthouses were designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
